My Square Metre

Certified B Corporation, score 97.3

My Square Metre lets people and businesses offset their carbon footprint by planting UK wildflower meadows, one square metre at a time.

You work out your footprint with a calculator, choose a one-off purchase or a monthly subscription, and we plant. Your account then shows the carbon you have offset, the meadow you have created and the bees you have fed, ready to share.

More than five million wildflowers planted so far.

Why wildflowers and not trees?

Wildflowers start taking in carbon within their first year, and a square metre of meadow stores more than a square metre of newly planted forest. They also feed and shelter bees and other pollinators. The UK has lost 97% of its meadowland since the 1930s.

How much carbon does one square metre offset?

About 300g a year on average, measured by testing the soil. Each square metre is protected for 30 years, so that is 3kg over its life.

Where does the money go?

£12 is budgeted for every square metre. That covers buying the land, planting it and looking after it for 30 years.

Does it take away farmland?

No. Meadows are only planted on poor quality land or former industrial sites, never on land that is suitable for farming.

How much does it cost?

Packages start at £800. Evening Party is £800, Full Day Sound is £1,000 and Full Day + Drinks Reception is £1,200. Travel, planned extra hours and an overnight stay where needed can change the total.

What is included?

Every package includes music planning, professional sound, a clean DJ setup, setup and pack-down, and up to five hours of evening DJing. The higher packages add daytime sound, speech microphones and a DJ set for the drinks reception.

Can guests request songs?

Yes. Requests can be open, filtered around your taste or limited to tracks you approve. We agree the approach before the event.

When should we book?

Once you have a date and venue, particularly for a Friday or Saturday. Firm bookings are taken up to two years ahead, and availability is confirmed before any deposit is paid.

Chris Owen, Optimum Safety, on My Square Metre
From the very first song, the dance floor was packed. Ed read the room perfectly, kept the energy high all night and had everyone up dancing.
